The drive back from Oxford to Nashville via Holly Springs was a lot quicker than the journey down – until I got into the outskirts of town and hit a traffic snarl that meant it ended up taking the same time.
I had a car with GPS fitted. Thank goodness because I had to drive out to the Loveless Barn after dark to see some of the Aussies perform for the Music City Roots live to air. I would never have found my way using just a map.
Hosted by the inimitable Jim Lauderdale the evening is a little bit like Denise’s Grand Old Twang shows but much more hokey in an old-fashioned way. Tim Thorpe is a much better link man. So I guess it is based on the Grand Old Opry concept and it works and the two-and-a-half hour show draws a good crowd. For $10 it is a bargain.
Jordie Lane, Chris Altmann, Caitlin Harnett and Felicity Urquhart all performed 4 – 6 songs each and acquited themselves well. I think this is a much better showcase for the Aussies because these are the people you want them to reach – an American audience.
