Pharoah Sanders Heads Melbourne Jazz Fest


Jazz legend Pharoah Sanders will headline the Melbourne International Jazz Festival from May 28 to June 7. Other international acts include Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, Kurt Elling, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Irvin Mayfield with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, The Bad Plus, guitarist Richard Bona, drummer Eric Harland and from Norway, the Tord Gustavsen Quartet. 

The local contingent will be spearheaded by the Monash Art Ensemble with the Young Wagilak Group of Arnhem Land with Paul Grabowsky’s new multi-movement suite, Nyilipidgi. Other locals include the Barney McCall Quintet, Sam Keevers, James Muller, Wilbur Wilde and the Andrea Keller Quartet.

To mark the closing of the iconic Bennett’s Lane jazz club in mid-June a series of showcase performances will be held at the club. Acts announced include The Cat Empire, the Allan Browne Quintet and, from the USA, Erica Harland Voyager, the Julian Lage Trio and the Walter Smith III Quintet.

Brian Wise was the Editor of Addicted To Noise‘s Australian site from 1997 – 2002. The site won two ONYA Awards as Best Online Music Magazine in 1999 & 2000. He has also been Editor since its reincarnation in 2013. He also presents the weekly music interview program Off The Record on 102.7 Triple R-FM ( in Melbourne. It is networked to 45+ stations across Australia on the Community Radio Network and is a four-time winner of the Best Music Program Award from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. In 2012, it was nominated as a finalist in the Excellence in Music Programming category. Brian was also the Founding Editor & Publisher of Rhythms Magazine and is now its Senior Contributing Editor.
