My plan for today was to fly to San Francisco, pick up a car and drive down to Monterey. I was scheduled to fly there via Houston leaving at 11.15am. Plan simple. But as they say, the best laid plans sometimes go wrong.
Literally seconds before I pressed ‘pay’ to book a hotel room for that night an announcement came over the PA to say the flight was cancelled due to a hydraulic problem and that another plane was coming from St Louis but would not leave there for another 30 minutes.
So it was an hour and a half line-up to get a rescheduled flight at 1.20pm via Washington DC! For this I got two $10 food vouchers one of which I used at Dulles airport.
The flight to Frisco turned out to be entertaining. I was sitting next to Jamaican-American Bruce who was hilarious and Peter from Vermont, a young beekeeper and ecologist who kept a diary with questions such as ‘Why are we here?’ Indeed.
Bruce chided me for only using one of my vouchers and said that I was too nice and should have complained more. So when I got to San Francisco I went to the United Help desk and explained that I had been delayed and would they be able to help me. I recalled from previous trips that you can get a $50 as night hotel voucher. This time I lucked out and got a free room at the Embassy Suites in Santa Clara. I told Bruce at the baggage claim and he said, ‘I’m proud of you!’
I reached the hotel in just 30 minutes along the 101 past Cupertino and Silicon Valley, using the GPS which, thankfully, didn’t send me via the scenic route. Got the final two parts of the program recorded by 1.00am and emailed them back! What a day!
