NPR Names 150 Greatest Albums By Women


Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Carole King and Nina Simone are some of the classic names that appear in the Top 10 of  American National Public Radio’s list of The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women. But there are contemporary names there as well: Beyonce, Missy Elliott, Amy Winehouse and Lauryn Hill.

The full list includes just 18 albums from the past 17 years since the turn of the millennium. The ’70s (34), ’80s (36) and ’90s (40) gain the most representation with the ’60s providing 22 albums. There are multiple listings for Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone.
