New Monkees Box Set!

The latest release in Rhino Records Handmade series is the lavish The Monkees Present boxed set with 85 tracks (60 previously unreleased) across 3 CDs. The box features the original album re-mastered, plus two extra discs of unreleased mixes, and never-before-heard songs.

The release is only available at the band’s website (monkeees.com) which is also premiering a new track, ‘Bye Bye Baby Bye Bye (Mono Mix)’ from the set. The cost is US$59.98.

The Monkees Present was released on October 1 1969, after The Monkees has passed their peak popularity. The group’s popular NBC show had been cancelled a year earlier and bassist Peter Tork had left the group. None of the previous 8 singles had reached the Top 20 and their previous two albums had also failed to reach the Top 30 on the album chart. Drummer Micky Dolenz, singer Davy Jones and guitarist Michael Nesmith decided to exert more creative control in the recording of a new album.

The album was originally planned to be a double disc release but economics and waning popularity dictated that it was a single album release. As it turned out, The Monkees Present was the group’s last shot at commercial success, but it is claimed to be amongst their most varied. While the single ‘Listen To The Band’ (written by Nesmith) and Dolenz’s anti-war anthem, ‘Mommy And Daddy,’  failed to dent the Top 50 in the USA, they gave the group its last Top 30 chart hits in Australia.

The Monkees Present barely reached the Top 100 on the Billboard chart and shortly afterwards Nesmith announced that he was leaving to form his own band.

Rhino claims that the new set is is strictly limited to 5,000 individually numbered boxes. The box  also includes an exclusive bonus 7″ vinyl single for ‘Good Clean Fun (Alternate Mix)’ b/w ‘Mommy and Daddy (Mono Mix)’ in a picture sleeve.

In the meantime, the remaining members of The Monkees – Dolenz, Nesmith and Tork – have three dates left on their 24-date A Midsummer’s Night With The Monkees tour.
