Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams returns on February 5 with The Ghosts of Highway 20 . After 11 highly acclaimed studio albums, Williams is in the most prolific period of her nearly four-decade career.
Three-time Grammy winner Lucinda Williams new album Ghosts of Highway 20 (Highway 20/Thirty Tigers), her 12th studio album, is due for release next Friday, February 5. One major music retailer in Australia is taking pre-orders online for signed copies of the album.
A dozen of the 14 songs were inspired by various periods and experiences throughout Williams’ life that all tie into Highway 20 (aka Interstate 20), which runs in part from Georgia to Texas, the focal region of the album. Whether it is cities she has resided in (Atlanta, GA, Macon, GA), has family ties to (Shreveport, LA, Monroe, LA) or previously written about (Jackson, LA, Vicksburg, MS), Williams’ personal experiences and connections to these areas inform the narratives.
Williams previewed several of the songs from The Ghosts of Highway 20 during her recent Australian tour and the album features some of the most experimental arrangements Williams has ever recorded, including a lost Woody Guthrie song Williams wrote the music to.
Guitarists Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz are studio guests – with Leisz co-producing the album with Williams and Tom Overby – and recorded with Williams’ rhythm section of Butch Norton (drums) and David Sutton (bass). Guitarist Val McCallum also guests on two tracks.
Williams celebrated her 63rd birthday on Australia Day and is playing the Southern Jam in Florida on Saturday January 30 and will then undertake a 27-date American tour from March 4 through April 23.
