Celebrating 20 years, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival has released its program for 2017. There will be over 120 events in 27 venues featuring 400+ Australian, international and emerging artists.
The 10-day program offers a wide range of activities, from jazz masters in world-class venues such as Hamer Hall to intimate club performances, from gigs in cafes in Melbourne’s west to cross-artform collaborations with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and KAGE Physical Theatre.
The opening night program features guitarist Bill Frisell playing selections from his acclaimed new project featuring unique interpretations of classic American cinema music, ranging from Hitchcock’s Psycho through to Ennio Morricone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, via Nino Rota’s iconic score for The Godfather. Frisell is joined by an all-star band featuring Petra Haden (Beck, Foo Fighters), Thomas Morgan (Paul Motian, Tomasz Stańko) and Rudy Royston (Branford Marsalis, Mingus Big Band).
Also announced in the line-up are Carla Bley and her trio, Dianne Reeves, the Kenny Barron Trio and an array of Australian talent including The Necks, Scott Tinkler, Andrea Keller, Sam Keevers and more.
